Approval has been given by the Oregon Energy Facility Siting Council for the construction of what will be the world’s largest onshore wind farm in Oregon which will be known as Shepherd’s Flat Wind Farm. The project will be developed by the Sacramento, California firm Caithness Shepherds Flat LLC and will consist of 303 wind turbines which will have a capacity to generate 909MW of electricity.
At this point the planning is still in the early stages with details such as when construction might begin or when the project would become operational still to be disclosed. The site of the Shepherd’s Flat facility is around 5 miles southeast of the town of Arlington.
Electricity generated by the wind farm would enter the electricity system through the Bonneville Power Administration’s Slatt Substation.
The “world’s largest” tag is an indicator of the scale of this operatoin, however the title is scheduled to only have a short time-frame with T. Boone Pickens’ planned 4000MW Pampa Wind Project expected to be operational by 2014.
