- The Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) has signed a letter of intent with SunEdison for a 20-year power purchase agreement to provide 10 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity at several locations throughout the state. The agreement includes installation, construction, monitoring and operation of the solar systems.
- Phoenix Solar AG has connected what is says is the largest photovoltaic (PV) plant in Greece to the grid in Pontoiraklia, near Thessaloniki. Phoenix Solar was responsible for planning and construction of the plant. The owner and initiator of the power plant with a peak output of 944 kW is SunErgy A.E.
- In a separate statement, Phoenix Solar has announced a €450 million framework supply contract with California-based Solyndra Inc., a manufacturer of copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) thin-film modules. The contract runs from 2008 to 2012.
- First Solar, Inc. will build a 10 MW photovoltaic (PV) power plant for Sempra Generation near Boulder City, Nevada. First Solar will design, engineer and construct the turnkey PV power plant and will provide monitoring and maintenance services for the plant over its lifetime. Sempra Generation will be the developer for the project, and will own and operate the PV power plant once completed. Construction began in July, and the 10 MW PV power plant is expected to be completed by the end of 2008.
- Impax New Energy Investors (NEI) acquired 15.5 MW of operating solar PV projects in three transactions in the Spanish regions of Extremadura and Castilla-la-Mancha in July. These acquisitions add to 15.6 MW of solar PV projects that the NEI bought in May and June, including 3 MW in Extremadura and two projects totaling 12.6 MW in Castilla-la Mancha. Based on these six transactions in the past three months, Impax New Energy Investors has now invested in just over 35 MW of built and operating solar PV projects in Spain.
- GE Energy Financial Services, a unit of GE, and Grupo Corporativo Landon will invest about US$350 million in Fotowatio, said to be one of Spain’s largest and most successful solar power project developers. Fotowatio owns, operates and is developing almost 960 MW of solar projects in the fast-growing solar power markets of Spain, Italy and the United States.
- The European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) has elected SCHOTT Solar’s Managing Director Michael Harre to its Board. Harre was elected as one of two new Board Members at the end of June. The EPIA Board has the task of representing the solar sector at a political level and driving forward technical harmonization of the global photovoltaic industry through the use of international standards.
- Platina Finance Limited, a London and Paris-based private equity fund adviser and manager specialising in renewable energy investments, has announced the €24.6 million refinancing of Burton Wold, its 20 MW, 10 turbine wind farm, and the €9.4 million financing close of Winscales Moor, a seven turbine wind farm currently under construction.
- The World Wind Energy Association has awarded its World Wind Energy Award 2008 to Jane Kruse, and Dr. Preben Maegaard, Denmark, and Paul Gipe, USA. The three are said to be the pioneers in community wind power in Europe and in North America. They have advised numerous governments about how to implement wind energy, based on the idea of broad social involvement and community ownership, in order not only to increase the social acceptance of wind farms, but also to achieve real participation of as many people as possible.
- Community Windpower Ltd has submitted a planning application for the proposed Davidstow Community Windfarm, to North Cornwall District Council Planning Department, UK. The windfarm would provide approximately 50% of the remaining installed capacity required for Cornwall’s 2010 renewable energy target of 93-108 MW in one development in a remote area. The proposed 20 wind turbines would be capable of generating up to 50 MW.
